چکیده

This short note describes some simple acoustical wave experiments that explain the physics of reflection and transmission coefficient formulae for normal incidence P-waves. The experiments help us to understand the mathematical expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients for displacement and pressure that are frequently used in seismology. Figure 1. The figure shows a boundary between two layers of contrasting acoustical impedance. The boundary conditions require continuity of the normal displacement and the normal component of stress. ρ ρ ρ ρ = − + R v v

THE EFFECT OF PURE SHEAR ON THE REFLECTION OF PLANE WAVES AT THE BOUNDARY OF AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE

This paper is concerned with the effect of pure shear on the reflection from a plane boundary of infinitesimal plane waves propagating in a half-space of incompressible isotropic elastic material. For a special class of constitutive laws it is shown that an incident plane harmonic wave propagating in the considered plane gives rise to a surface wave in addition to a reflected wave (with angle o...

Study of critical behavior in concrete during curing by application of dynamic linear and nonlinear means.

The monitoring of both linear and nonlinear elastic properties of a high performance concrete during curing is presented by application of compressional and shear waves. To follow the linear elastic behavior, both compressional and shear waves are used in wide band pulse echo mode. Through the value of the complex reflection coefficient between the cell material (Lucite) and the concrete within...

Bottom profiling by correlating beam-steered noise sequences.

It has already been established that by cross-correlating ambient noise time series received on the upward and downward steered beams of a drifting vertical array one can obtain a subbottom layer profile. Strictly, the time differential of the cross correlation is the impulse response of the seabed. Here it is shown theoretically and by simulation that completely uncorrelated surface noise resu...

Reflection of Waves in a Rotating Transversely Isotropic Thermoelastic Half-space Under Initial Stress

The present paper concerns with the effect of initial stress on the propagation of plane waves in a rotating transversely isotropic medium in the context of thermoelasticity theory of GN theory of type-II and III. After solving the governing equations, three waves propagating in the medium are obtained. The fastest among them is a quasi-longitudinal wave. The slowest of them is a thermal wave. ...

On the significance of reflection coefficients produced by active surfaces bounding one-dimensional sound fields.

Active boundary surfaces intended to control reverberation or other characteristics of enclosed sound fields have often been investigated using plane wave tubes. This paper presents an analysis of actively terminated semi-infinite and finite-length plane wave tubes to provide needed clarification of the effects of these surfaces. By considering relationships between complex pressure-amplitude r...
